This is a picture of the journey from a household with 5 people in 2015 transitioning to 2 people with all but one appliance being electric.
Over the 10 years the household has gone to 2 adults and one EV. All non-electric appliances have been replaced by electric units except for the spa heater. Over this period, we have had up to 6 people living in the house particularly during early COVID when you could only work from home.
Below is a graph of the energy consumption and the cost.

Notes:
-
Energy costs include electricity, petrol and gas.
-
The total energy consumption is based on one vehicle, so you get an apples with apples comparison.
-
The average distance travelled annually in the EV is 22,000Km
As you can see the energy consumption has over time significantly increased whilst the cost has continued southward. The transition to electric started in 2020-2021 with the install of solar panels, followed by 2021-2022 acquisition of an EV (replacing an 18 year old Voyager) and then in 2023-2024 additional solar panels and batteries. Finally in 2023-2024 replacement of 18-year-old instant hot water system and then in early 2025 moved to an induction stove replacing a 19-year-old gas cook top.
Below are also graphs of electricity prices we paid at the time and the change from year to year.

In summary, our electricity consumption has gone up over the 10 years as we have weaned ourselves off gas and petrol. This has led to our energy costs going down significantly, in fact it is about a third of what we spent 10 years ago.
